How to temporarily disable an Instagram account

This wikiHow shows you how to temporarily disable your Instagram account, which prevents your profile and posts from being viewed or searched without deleting your account. This prevents anyone from claiming your username and you do not need to make a backup copy of your photos or videos as they will be kept private until you decide to recover your account. You cannot temporarily disable your Instagram account from within the app.

Part 1 Deactivate your account temporarily

 1 Go to the Instagram website.

It is located at https://instagram.com/. If you're already signed in to Instagram, it will take you to your homepage. If you do not have a login, click enter Enter your username and password at the bottom of the page and click enter.

2 Click on the profile icon.

This is the person's icon in the top right corner of the page.

 3 Click Edit Profile.

This is just to the right of your username at the top of the page.

4 Scroll down and temporarily disable my account.

You will see this link at the bottom right of the page "Edit profile".

 5 Indicate a reason to deactivate your account.

To do this, click on the box to the right of the "Why are you activating your account?" and then click on a reason.

6 Enter your Instagram password

Do this in the box to the right of the text "Please enter your password to continue".

7 Click on temporarily disable the account.

This button is at the bottom of the page.

8 Click OK when prompted.

Doing so will disable your account by closing your Instagram session on all your connected devices.

 Part 2 Reset your account

1 Sign In Instagram

 Sign in to Instagram with your username and password, and your account will be reactivated as it was before. If you have subscribed to the Instagram website, you will still need to sign in to each of your devices.
